Ibolya Markóczi-Revák: Investigation of Science Problem Solving Strategy Among 9- to 10-year-olds

The study examines scientific problem solving strategies among 9- to 10-year-olds. Scientific problem solving is an important element in the competence of understanding the world of nature. While this is improved, pupils acquire skills which can also be used in solving everyday problems. As part of an experiment aimed at improving their competence, the study analyses the strategies of problem solving among 9- to 10-year-old pupils. It has managed to obtain an overall picture of the quality and quantity of those elements. Taking the characteristic features of children’s thinking into consideration, based on a linear model, we found that children achieve better results in prediction when referring to the final solution, supposing and planning than in expressing the aim and the problem itself. Children express thoughts by using everyday language, even if they know the necessary scientific concept, especially when they attempt to explain the solution. Science education can meet its requirements only if pupils are motivated and interested in the process of learning when pupils are allowed to experience scientific phenomena in an active way which provides them with an experience to remember.
