Csaba Csíkos : Large sample 3-year longitudinal study on Jacobs and Paris’ IRA questionnaire among 3rd-5th grade students and Paris’ (1978) IRA questionnaire on reading awareness. The Index of reading Awareness measures 3rd to 5th grade students’ conscious metacognitive knowledge about their reading processes, and about reading in general. The sample consists of 3158 pupils who form a nationwide representative sample This population was measured in November in three consecutive years from 2005 to 2007. We analyze the reliability of the questionnaire and its subscales. The analysis of means and standard deviations suggests that elementary school students have strikingly marked beliefs about their reading process and about the phenomenon how one can be a good reader. These beliefs in many cases are different from mature readers’ knowledge about reading and reading processes. Multivariate analyses were conducted to reveal the structure of the variables. Six factors have been revealed, partly in accordance with the theoretically set subscales of the questionnaire. The importance and the implicit way of developing students’ reading awareness have been emphasized. MAGYAR PEDAGÓGIA 108. Number 2. 97-134.
