Katalin Kéri: Elementary Schools in the Medieval Islamic World

After Muhammad’s teachings the bedouin Arabs conquered the kingdoms of the Middle East and other territories. The Muslim religion step by step became wide-spread in North-Africa, Southern Europe and in Asia. Thanks to the different cultural influences in the Muslim world, by the middle of the eighth century a popular system of elementary school education became generally adopted. For the early generations of Muslims, the Qu’ran served as a basis of belief, worship, law and behavior, and he founded education by his work. Reading and writing this book as well as learning parts and Muslim traditions was the syllabus in the elementary schools. This article presents in short how these schools were organized, how the teachers disciplined their pupils and what kind of methods were widely used in the Muslim world. This study gives a summary of foreign research and offers a survey of sources in Hungarian concering the function of elementary schools.
