Péter Nagy: Religious instruction before 1949 During the period between 1919 and 1945, when religious instruction and church attendance were made mandatory by educational authorities, there tended to be a greater number of religious families. As secular impetus can be described in ideological instruction; the ratio of marriages between members of different religions reached 35% in Budapest; 42% of all weddings were held outside the church. The acceptance of a lifestyle which was in conflict with church values is indicated by the data on divorces, according to which divorced women within the 30-34 age group reached 2% in 1930. Weekly church attendance declined: 50% of middle-aged men and 60% of middle-aged women in the mid-1920s attended services; in 1944, this declined to 41% and 51%, respectively. MAGYAR PEDAGÓGIA 99.
