Éva Kenesei: The Role of Music in the Leisure Activities of Senior Year Student Teachers

The importance of leisure activities is increasing in the life of prospective primary school teachers, partly because of their training, and partly because of changes in societal expectations. Educators’ behaviour is a crucial factor in the efficiency of aesthetic education, thus it is important to integrate aesthetic needs into the self-education of prospective primary school teachers. Society expects teachers to promote arts and culture in the community as part of their profession. This paper presents the results of a survey on the opinion of senior year students training to be teachers in the primary school regarding their musical education in the course of their pre-service training. Data were also collected on their leisure activities related to music. The literature highlighs the following research questions as relevant in this area: What role do student teachers attribute to music in their leisure activities, i.e. what musical programmes and activities are they mostly involved in? What is the relationship between passive participation in musical programmes, active involvement in music and other leisure activities? What relationships exist between the various leisure activities?
