László Kinyó: The development of narrative skills and their role in history teaching The aims of the study are twofold. On the one hand, the present paper gives a literature review on narrative epistemology and the emergence, characteristics and succession of historical narratives. On the other hand, it integrates the narrative paradigm and the research results of cognitive psychology concerning narrative texts in order to examine the development of narrative skills as well as the possibilities of facilitating this development. The overview of the literature allows for a few conclusions regarding improvements in the methodology of history teaching. 1) It draws attention to the use of collective narratives in the education process in order to help the formation of social identity. 2) It stresses the importance of shaping the story-telling scheme in the development of narrative skills, which should take into account general developmental processes and capitalise on the potentials of scheme-based tasks.
